In 2019, Konami introduced a brand-new format to the world of Yu-Gi-Oh!, called Speed Duel. Speed Duel is sure to provide a specialised play experience for newer players, as well as offering a nostalgic factor for lapsed players who want to see they characters they know and love in action.
As the name suggests, the format is geared for faster play. This is achieved by using a smaller deck size (20-30 cards) and a life total of 4000 compared to the regular 8000 used in traditional duels. Additionally, the field for Speed Duel features less zones than a regular game of Yu-Gi-Oh! and this allows for simpler game play – perfect for newer players who are developing their understanding of the game. A cool feature that you will come across in Speed Duel is the use of a Skill Card – this allows you to select a well-known character who contribute to your game with their unique skills!
With the introduction of a new format, we now have two ways to duel, Speed Dueling and Master Duelling. Master Dueling is simply the traditional way to play the game, but it is important to distinguish the two, since there are differences:
• Master Dueling features bigger Decks and a larger Dueling Field, with special Card Zones for additional monster types.
• Master Dueling introduces more advanced types of monster.
• Master Dueling allows players to use cards from over 15 years of Yu-Gi-Oh! history, allowing for more powerful card interactions and strategies.
You can use your Speed Dueling cards in Master Duels, but selected Speed Duel cards cannot be used outside of Speed Duels. These cards feature a special watermark for easy identification:
