Unmatched Tournament 5: DOUBLES

IN BATTLE, THERE ARE NO EQUALS!

Perhaps there are no equals in battle, but when working as a team one has to compromise, right?

Would you be able to deal enough damage with your hero, while working together with your teammate? Or will you go down in flames at the hands of two others?

Grab a friend and come join us for some tag-team fun!

The next Unmatched Tournament hosted at Jix Hobbies will be a doubles event.

Be ready for epic battles and beautiful gameplay!

And try your hand, together with your partner, at winning an ‘unequal’ match!

In order to take part in the Doubles Unmatched Tournament, you and a friend/family member/partner must enter two Heroes from any Unmatched set (max. 1 ranged hero/sidekick) and take part in the tournament as a team.

The tournament will consist of 4 rounds of 60min each with a lunch break in between.

The tournament might finish before 17:00, but it will strictly start at 10:00. Make sure you arrive at Jix Hobbies at least 30min before the starting time.

This will be the fifth Unmatched Tournament hosted by Jix Hobbies in collaboration with Solarpop Go Play. The previous tournaments were all very popular, with no less than ten players taking part in the tournaments. The latest tournament had 20 entries!

Jix Hobbies will be selling cold drinks, snacks and coffee (subject to loadshedding) throughout the day. Please note that there is a McDonald’s located in Menlyn Retail Park.

For more information, please contact Jix Hobbies.

Board Game Day

“THERE ARE ONLY THREE FORMS OF HIGH ART: THE SYMPHONY, THE ILLUSTRATED CHILDREN’S BOOK AND THE BOARD GAME.” - BRIAN K. VAUGHAN.

Do you enjoy playing board games?

If you’re like us, then you probably love playing board games, but you don’t always have the time, the means or the people to play with.

Perhaps you feel that you’d rather play a game first, to try it out, before getting a copy of your own?

That is exactly why Jix Hobbies is hosting another Board Game Day!

A set time & date for you and your friends or family to schedule into your very busy calendar, where you can play specific board games and have fun the whole day!

For the next Board Game Day, the theme will be CIVILIZATION (CIV.).

You’ll have a choice between these different civilization-themed board games:

  • 7 Wonders
  • Catan
  • Dominion
  • Tiny Towns

Throughout the day you’ll be able to play these board games together with other players.

You’ll be able to experience these extremely fun games and if you get stuck, there will be game guides who’ll help you along. The day will consist of two sessions with two specific board games available to play in each session and a lunch break in between.

Don’t miss out!

It’s going to be tons of fun!

And there will be TWO lucky-draw prizes up for grabs! Sponsored by Solarpop Go Play.

Jix Hobbies will be selling cold drinks, snacks and coffee (subject to loadshedding) throughout the day. Please note that there is a McDonald’s located in Menlyn Retail Park.

Jix is planning to host more Board Game Days in the future. If you have any queries, please send Jix Hobbies a WhatsApp on 066 292 4473.

What are Board Games?

Board games are tabletop games that typically use pieces. These pieces are moved or placed on a pre-marked board and often include elements of table, card, role-playing, and miniatures games as well. Many board games feature a competition between two or more players, but some board games are co-operative.

Board Game Picks of the Day

7 Wonders

In 7 Wonders, a game by Repos Production, players draft cards to develop their ancient civilization and build its Wonder of the World. The player with the most victory points win!

7 Wonders lasts three ages.

At each age, players receive seven cards from a particular deck, they choose one of those cards, and then pass the remainder to an adjacent player. Players reveal their cards simultaneously, paying resources if needed or collecting resources or interacting with other players in various ways. Players have individual boards with special powers on which to organize their cards.

Each player then chooses another card from the deck they were passed, and the process repeats until players have six cards in play from that age. After three ages, the game ends.

In essence, 7 Wonders is a card development game. Some cards have immediate effects, while others provide bonuses or upgrades later in the game. Some cards provide discounts on future purchases. Some provide military strength to overpower your neighbours and others give nothing but victory points. Each card is played immediately after being drafted, so you’ll know which cards your neighbour is receiving and how their choices might affect what you’ve already built up. Cards are passed left-right-left over the three ages, so you need to keep an eye on the neighbours in both directions.

Catan

In Catan you collect and trade resources to build up the island of Catan. It was originally published by KOSMOS, but it’s grown so popular that it now has a brand of its own: Catan Studio.

In Catan, players try to be the dominant force on the island of Catan by building settlements, cities, and roads. On each turn, dice are rolled to determine what resources the island produces. Players build by spending resources (sheep, wheat, wood, brick and ore) that are depicted by these resource cards; each land type, with the exception of the unproductive desert, produces a specific resource: hills produce brick, forests produce wood, mountains produce ore, fields produce wheat, and pastures produce sheep.

Dominion

Dominion is an open-drafting, deck-building game where you must acquire the most valuable lands by building your deck with treasure and power cards. Dominion is published by Rio Grande Games.

In Dominion, each player starts with an identical, very small deck of cards. In the centre of the table is a selection of other cards the players can “buy” as they can afford them. Through their selection of cards to buy, and how they play their hands as they draw them, the players construct their deck on the fly, striving for the most efficient path to the precious victory points by game end.

Dominion is not a collectable card game (CCG), but the play of the game is similar to the construction and play of a CCG deck

Tiny Towns

In Tiny Towns, you must execute a perfect plan as you build your town one building at a time. This is a game by the Alderac Entertainment Group.

You are the mayor of a tiny town in the forest in which the smaller creatures of the woods have created a civilization hidden away from predators. This new land is small and the resources are scarce, so you take what you can get and never say no to building materials. Cleverly plan and construct a thriving town, and don’t let it fill up with wasted resources! Whoever builds the most prosperous tiny town wins!

Your town is represented by a 4×4 grid on which you will place resource cubes in specific layouts to construct buildings. Each building scores victory points (VPs) in a unique way. When no player can place any more resources or construct any buildings, the game ends, and any squares without a building are worth -1 VP. The player with the most VP wins!
