Nauctis: The Sunken Realm is the first Magic: The Gathering premier set of 2027, releasing on 5 February 2027. Wizards of the Coast calls it Magic’s first underwater plane: an ocean world of cities beneath the waves, where two warring kingdoms clash and a group of heroes must stop the sea from swallowing their home.

What is being released

Wizards describes a plane explored from calm shallows down into an abyss where ancient power dwells. Merfolk, seals, homarids and humans all appear in the official 2027 announcement. Full product details, such as Commander decks and bundle contents, have not yet been listed on the official product page.

Why this release is significant

Nauctis is also the first set to use Wizards’ updated booster design for 2027. According to Wizards, Booster Packs (formerly Play Boosters) gain God Packs, roughly 1 in 1,000, containing 14 rare or mythic cards including a celebration card. Japan Showcase cards can appear in traditional foil in the wildcard slot, and foil rare and mythic drop rates go up. Foil commons and uncommons are removed from these packs, so any foil is now a rare or mythic.

Collector Boosters also get God Packs, at roughly 1 in 300, with a celebration card, a foil land and 12 other rare or mythic cards. Wizards states that prices are unchanged.

Competitive gameplay impact

A new premier set means a new Limited environment and a refreshed Standard. Wizards has not yet revealed the mechanics, so we will add competitive notes once the official previews begin.

Collector value and exclusivity

The headline for collectors is the God Pack change. Opening a Nauctis Booster Pack or Collector Booster now carries a small chance of a pack packed with rares and mythics, which adds real excitement to prerelease and launch weekend openings.

Why players should care

An entirely new plane is the best kind of Magic set to start with: nobody knows the story yet, and every player opens their first packs on equal footing. Add the new God Packs, and the February launch is shaping up as one of the most exciting pack-opening weekends of the year.
